Program Description
This is a 10-week Customized Training program that will prepare students to work in a retail store. This program includes classroom and on-the-job training and is taught by an instructor from the Community College of Baltimore County.
The 10 weeks consist of:
- Soft Skills training at WTC – 1 week
- CVS Health Mock Store at WTC – 2 weeks
- CVS Health Paid Externship in a CVS store – 6 weeks
- CVS Health Classroom training/Employment Preparation at WTC – 1 week
Training curriculum includes:
- Roles of the store team
- Phone and intercom etiquette
- Scenarios and role play
- Reading CVS labels
- Non-verbal communication
- Active listening
- Inventory tracking & stock rotation
- Cash register skills
- Completing I-9 paperwork
- Customer service / customer complaints
Students who successfully complete the program will:
- Receive certificates in Merchandising, Customer Service and Stock Room.
- Acquire skills that are transferable to other work environments.
- Be recommended by CVS managers for positions internally and outside of CVS Health in their community.
- Work with WTC’s Employment Services Team to prepare for and secure employment.
Program Requirements
An individual must possess:
- A VR case with an IPE identifying
Retail Salespersons as the employment goal.
- A desire to work in retail
- 6th grade reading level
- Basic math skills
- Be able to lift between 30 pounds on an occasional basis and bend, stoop, stand for long periods of time
Employment Outlook
Employment opportunities for retail workers in Maryland are expected to decline 2% or more by 2032. Average hourly wage in Maryland is $16.19.

Program Description
This program is a 20-week Customized Training which will prepare individuals for an entry level position in the pharmacy profession. The program includes classroom and clinical on-the-job training and is taught by an instructor from the Community College of Baltimore County.
Pharmacy Technicians assist pharmacists in hospitals or freestanding pharmacies and are typically involved in customer interactions, insurance claim processing, maintaining inventories, and filling prescriptions. This program prepares students to take the national Pharmacy Technician Certifying Board (PTCB) test to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
Those individuals hired at CVS will have the opportunity to become a Registered Apprentice.
Students will be prepared to take the national certification exam through PTCB-Pharmacy Technician Certifying Board to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician.
Training includes:
- 4-week prep class.
- 14 weeks of classroom and 6 weeks of clinical instruction totaling 160 hours, equaling 25 hours average per week.
- Orientation to CVS programs and procedures, inventory management replenishment, and prescription medication measurements.
Program Requirements
- 18 years of age and possess a HS Diploma or GED.
- 9th grade reading comprehension level and 9th grade math skills.
- Pass a drug screen prior to the start of the program.
- Submit to a background check prior to the start of the program. Felonies and certain misdemeanors may disqualify the applicant.
- Have efficient computer, study, and test taking skills.
- Be detail oriented, be able to change from one task to another, work accurately and quickly, and be able to utilize computers and telephones often.
- Possess high level communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills, and must also demonstrate integrity.
- Be able to work with patients, family, and health care providers concerning inventory, insurance, medications, and the human body.
- Have close visual acuity to perform activities such as transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, reading, and visual inspection involving small parts.
- Possess the temperament and character to excel as a technician, including the desire to work in a retail environment, good tolerance for light and noise, and the ability to provide excellent customer service to the public.
The physical duties of a Pharmacy Technician require the ability to:
- Stand for 3-4 hours or sit for long hours while constantly being focused on the task at hand.
- Move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly between work areas.
- Pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers, and extend hands and arms in any direction.
- Exercise safe practices while being exposed to a work environment that may include unpleasant sights, odors, materials, and communicable diseases.
- Bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist and stooping to a considerable degree and ability to fully use the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Frequently exert up to 10 pounds of force and occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force. Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

Employment opportunities for Pharmacy Technicians in Maryland are expected to rise faser than average (5% to 8%). The average hourly wage in Maryland is $19.37.
