Building Financial Independence and Mastering the Art of Growth
July 2026 — For Dustin, true success is about continuous learning, personal responsibility, and the satisfaction of a job well done. Transitioning from high school to the workforce, Dustin turned determination into financial independence. With support from the Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) and his employer at Chick-fil-A, Dustin has shifted from an adolescent mindset to a driven adult, securing full-time employment and laying a strong foundation for his future.
Finding the Right Direction: The DORS Connection
Dustin was first introduced to DORS during high school when a representative visited his school. Recognizing that he needed direction and motivation, Dustin enrolled in Work Readiness and Environmental Services training programs at the DORS Workforce & Technology Center (WTC). During his time with DORS, including stays in the program dorms, Dustin gained foundational employment skills. In class with instructor Marcia Neal, he learned crucial workspace "dos and don'ts" including, the importance of staying motivated, maintaining high standards, and taking personal accountability. "I learned the importance of working to make a living," Dustin reflects. "Don't use your disability as an excuse not to work. It feels good to be self-sufficient."
Thriving at Chick-fil-A
Through DORS employment specialist Cynthia Woolf, Dustin connected with "Mr. Doug" Honbarrier, a franchise owner of Chick-fil-A. Mr. Doug hired Dustin, a DORS consumer, and invested the time to train him in a fast-paced environment. That decision led to a successful partnership.
Dustin began part-time, maintaining environmental standards across the restaurant by cleaning windows, managing kitchen and dining area trash, sweeping the parking lot, restocking lemonade and soda towers. Over time, as his speed and confidence grew, Dustin transitioned into a full-time role, choosing full-time work which empowered him to become financially independent, no longer relying on government benefits.
Dustin takes immense pride in his work, especially during peak hours. "I do my best to keep up with the work pace and always communicate with management if I'm struggling or if they need me to do something else," Dustin explains. His dedication hasn't gone unnoticed, kitchen staff and customers alike frequently compliment his thorough work, especially his spotless windows.
Financial Literacy and Personal Growth
Dustin's growth extends far beyond his daily duties. Guided by mentorship from Mr. Doug, Dustin has embraced financial literacy and long-term investing, following Warren Buffett’s principle of "investing in yourself." Today, Dustin actively contributes to a 401(k) plan with an employer match, manages his budget carefully, and lives below his means to maintain a stable standard of living and support his mother.
