2023 DORS Leadership Exploration & Agency Programs (LEAP)
The DORS Leadership Exploration & Agency Programs (LEAP) is one component of the DORS Leadership Development Program. Through pairing with experienced, volunteer staff (aka “Agency Guide”), this program provides an opportunity to increase/expand a participant’s knowledge about the agency, as well as determine her/his inclination for leadership. The curriculum includes: group meetings (initial, mid-way, conclusion), goal planning, frequent contact (in-person, phone, e-mail), and the sharing of information with fellow participants.
NOTE: Participating in LEAP is NOT a pre-requisite to participation in the other two components of the DORS Leadership Program (Emerging Leaders and Executive Leadership Institute). Each component is a stand-alone program.
All staff are given the opportunity to apply for LEAP. Individuals are selected based on their level of experience, statement of interest, and the availability of Agency Guides. Executive Staff will not directly participate in this program.
Selection for participation in the program will be contingent upon:
- The approval of the Regional/Program Director/Branch Chief.
- The Staff Development office’s ability to make an appointment between Participant and Agency Guide.
Interested staff should complete the
Leadership Exploration & Agency Programs Participant Application and submit it through supervisory channels to the Staff Development Office. Please indicate 1st and 2nd choices for Agency Guides. These can be a specific position, or an Office.
Application deadline for the 2023 Leadership Exploration & Agency Programs is March 31, 2023. The first meeting will be April 20, 2023.
FAQs About the DORS Leadership Exploration & Agency Programs (LEAP)
-
Q: Are Contractual Employees allowed to participate in this program?
- The program is designed for all employees (contractual, full time, part time) who have been with DORS long enough to feel comfortable doing their job, and are interested in learning more about DORS and leadership. Regardless, Supervisory approval is required for all applications.
-
Q: How long will the program run?
- The 2023 program will begin April 20, 2023 and run about six months.
-
Q: How much time will I need to commit to the program?
- You will determine how much time you want to/can give to the program. It will be a balancing act between your usual job duties, your Agency Guide’s time, and your desire to learn as much as possible.
-
Q: May I pick a specific staff member who I’d like to be my Agency Guide? How are people "paired-up?"
- Please choose an Office/Position about which you’d like to learn more. If you choose a position which has multiple staff members (i.e., Supervisors, Administrative Specialists) and have a particular person in that position with whom you’d like to work, you can list that person on your application. But there is no guarantee you will be paired with that staff person, unless they volunteer to be an Agency Guide. Participants and Agency Guides will be paired based on the office/position that a person is interested in and which experienced staff volunteer to be Agency Guides.
-
Q: Do I have to participate in this program in order to be “eligible” to participate in the other Leadership Programs (i.e., the Emerging Leaders program and the Executive Leadership Institute program)?
- No. All three programs are separate and distinct programs.
-
Q: When will the other Leadership Programs be available?
- Calendar dates for the other two programs have not been set.
